---Injoke/reference revealed below (highlight to read)--- Nearly all the main plot elements of the 1950s British sci-fi story, The Day of the Triffids, are mentioned in this strip: a race of dangerous, highly intelligent mutated plants called Triffids comes into being, and after a mysterious “light storm”, nearly the entire world is blinded and at the mercy of the Triffids, and the survivors have a calm, controlled, “Oh bother, the planet’s becoming overrun with these brazen plants, might as well do the best we can to survive and eventually find a means of dealing with the bloody things” attitude about them.
