The Story Behind the Crossed-Out "U"
Actually, the history of the crossed-out “U” in WSSQUID is a SQ-esque blooper in itself. It all started when I was first writing a fan fiction starring Roger Wilco and Xandra the Felinoid. I was trying to come up with a name for it... preferably a cool acronym (or, in this case, an “Akril-nym”), and I eventually came up with WSSQUID (pronounced double-you-ess-squid). A mysterious word that seemed to spell out an equally alluring message to all who read it.
It was supposed to stand for Who Says Space Quest is Dead?, and I continued writing it for many happy months before I realized the shattering truth: There was a “U” in WSSQUID that had no word to stand for. Horror of horrors! I have no idea what was on my mind at that time that blocked out that terrifying fact, but I’m sure I’ll never forget it.
Of course, it was too late for me to change the acronym (the story was completely uploaded by this time), so I quickly designed a website with the new, improved (and acronymically correct) logo, WSSQ(U crossed out)ID. It’s now pronounced double-you-ess-ess-kew-eye-dee, and isn’t nearly as great as it once was, but it just goes to show that if someone is going to put together a fanfic of these proportions, she (or he) should expect the worst.
